When Singapore was enacted as an international free port in 1819, Pontianak became a leading of the Dutch East Indies in attracting most foreign trade. In 1834, the Dutch government made Pontianak and Sambas as a free port. Pontianak Port Branch located on the edge of Kapuas river that connects an area of 146.8 thousand km in the province of West Kalimantan. This port is the artery of the region’s economy of Pontianak, Sintete, Sambas, Sintang, Sanggau Kapuas Hulu, Telok Air, Ketapang and Singkawang.

Pontianak Port has a container terminal, equipped with various modern equipment to support optimal loading and unloading activities. The presence of sub-port in the vicinity, further strengthened the position of Pontianak Port as the main port in West Kalimantan.
